Lead pipes

Bristol Water says that if your home was built before the 1970s, you could have lead pipework. Lead pipe is dull grey, soft enough to scratch gently with a key, and has rounded, swollen joints. The easiest place to check is where the supply comes in, near the internal stop tap.

The pipe from the water main to the external stop tap in the pavement is normally the water company’s. From that stop tap into your house, it’s yours. If you replace your section, contact Bristol Water about theirs.

Why pipework fails

Frozen pipes

Avonmouth is exposed to the estuary, and pipes in lofts, garages and unheated units are most at risk in a cold snap. If a tap gives no water in freezing weather, turn off the stop tap, open the tap, and warm the pipe gently with a hairdryer or hot-water bottle, working from the tap end. Never use a naked flame. If the pipe has split, keep the water off and ring us.

Commercial pipework

Units and warehouses often have long pipe runs, pipes at height and supplies feeding several washrooms or kitchens. We repair and replace sections, add isolation valves so areas can be shut off separately, and reroute pipework when a space is fitted out.
