How we quote

Every quote starts with a phone call, and it’s free. Tell us what you can see: where the water is, how long it’s been going on, and what you’ve already tried. From that we’ll explain what we think is happening and what the job is likely to involve.

If something can’t be judged without seeing it, we’ll say so rather than guess. Either way, you’ll know what you’re agreeing to before any work starts, and nothing goes ahead until you’ve said yes.

Plumbing in Avonmouth

Avonmouth grew up around the docks. It was farmland until the 1860s, when the railway and pier arrived, and Avonmouth Dock opened in 1877, followed by the Royal Edward Dock in the early 1900s. Today most of the land is industrial, with the village itself tucked between the docks, the Portway and the M5.

That mix shapes the work we do here. In the village, homes range from older terraces to inter-war, post-war and modern houses, each with plumbing of its own era. Older pipework has usually been altered over the years, and joints between old and new materials are where leaks tend to start. Bristol Water says homes built before the 1970s could have lead pipework, so it’s worth knowing what your supply pipe is made of.

On the business side, warehouses, units, workshops and offices need working toilets, kitchens and washrooms, and a blocked drain or a leak can stop work. We can usually help out of hours, when a repair causes less disruption.

Low-lying land and drains

Avonmouth sits on low ground beside the Severn Estuary, where the main flood risk comes from the tide. The Avonmouth and Severnside flood defence project, run by the Environment Agency with the local councils, has been strengthening defences along the estuary to protect homes and businesses across the area.

Day to day, the plumbing issues we see are more ordinary: blocked drains, slow gullies and leaks. But on flat, low-lying ground, drains have less fall to work with, so keeping them clear of fat, wipes and silt matters. Wessex Water runs the sewers here, and its Avonmouth works treats wastewater from across Bristol.

  4. We arrange a time. For emergencies, as soon as we can get to you.
  5. We fix it and explain what we did.

Where’s your stop tap?

Knowing where to turn the water off can save a ceiling, or a stockroom. It’s most often:

  • Under the kitchen sink, at the back of the cupboard
  • Near the front door, under the stairs or below a floorboard in the hall
  • In a business unit, near where the supply enters the building, often in a cleaner’s cupboard, kitchen or plant area

Turn it clockwise to close it. If it’s stiff, don’t force it, because old stop taps can snap. There’s also an external stop tap, usually in the pavement outside, which belongs to the water company. If yours won’t turn, we can fit a new one.

Quick checks before you call

  • No water at all? Check whether neighbours are affected. If so, it’s likely a supply issue for Bristol Water.
  • Sink draining slowly? Clear the plughole and the trap underneath, with a bowl in place.
  • Toilet running constantly? Lift the cistern lid and check whether the float is catching.
  • Radiator cold at the top? It probably needs bleeding.
  • Outside drain overflowing? If the chamber is full when you lift the cover, the blockage is further down the line.

Common questions

Are you really open 24 hours?

Yes. Ring 07468 343800 at any time, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Do you work for businesses?

Yes. We work in shops, offices, workshops and industrial units as well as homes, and can often come out of hours.

Do you charge for quotes?

No. Quotes are free and given over the phone. If we need to see the job first, we’ll tell you.

Do you work on boilers or gas?

No. We don’t work on gas appliances. For a boiler, gas fire or cooker, use a Gas Safe registered engineer. We do work on radiators, valves and heating pipework.

Who’s responsible for a blocked drain?

Since 1 October 2011, shared sewers and lateral drains outside your boundary have been the sewerage company’s responsibility. Here that’s Wessex Water. A drain serving only your property, inside your boundary, is yours.
